Commander Sloan grew up in a small farming community in West-Central Illinois.  He joined the Air Force right out of high school in 1988. He then began his career as an Air Force Meteorologist. Commander Sloan spent most of his career supporting Army units. He started out working alongside the 7th Infantry Division as a Combat Weather Team Observer in Panama during Operation Just Cause, before going into Special Operations.  In 1990 he earned his Grey Beret as a Special Operations Weather Team (SOWT) member and continued to work with the Army. He worked with 1st Special Forces Group, 5th Special Forces Group, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), and was attached to 1st Battalion 10th Special Forces Group as an operating location from the 321st Special Tactics Squadron (OL-A 321st STS) as a Special Tactics Weatherman. During his time working in the Special Operations Community, he worked alongside US SOCOM assets and other government agency assets. He also flew the SUAV Raven in many operations.  His last assignment before retiring in 2010 after 22 years was the Flight Chief of Training for the 26th Operational Weather Squadron. His major combat deployments include Operation Just Cause (Panama), Operation Noble Anvil (Kosovo), Operations in Africa, Operation Iraqi Freedom, among others. Commander Sloan has earned the Master Military Parachutist badge, Master Military Freefall Parachutist badge and the Master Meteorologist badge. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, Combat Readiness medal with 2 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct medal with 6 oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with 1 service star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal with 1 service star, Iraq Campaign medal with 1 service star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism service medal,  and the NATO medal. While stationed in Germany, his most memorable moment was being able to participate in the 60th Anniversary of D-Day by parachuting into St. Mer de Eglis DZ, Normandy, France along with 800 American paratroopers for the ceremony, and laying a wreath. His associations include the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, The Military Freefall Association, and the Grey Beret Association along with others. Commander Sloan currently works as an orthotic practitioner for Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS) at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport.

Commander Sloan and his wife Christine have been married for more than 30 years. They have 3 adult children and 3 grandchildren.
He enjoys hunting, fishing, riding his Harley Davidson, and spending time with his family (mostly his grandchildren)
Commander Sloan joined the VFW after returning from Panama and has been a member ever since.  He has held many local, district, and department positions. He is currently a Lifetime member of VFW Post 4588 Bossier City, Louisiana
